Audi has revealed the successor to its A4, now named the A5. Unlike the old A5, which was a sleek four-door coupe, this new version is available as a sedan and an estate. Audi is changing its naming system: electric vehicles will have even numbers, while traditional models will keep odd numbers.
The exterior design and platform of the new Audi A5 have been updated
The new A5 uses Audi’s new Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), which replaces the current A4’s 17-year-old MLB architecture. Do note that this platform is not related to the Premium Platform Electric, which underpins the likes of the Q6 e-tron and the Porsche Macan EV. The A5 retains a longitudinal engine layout, but Audi claims it is capable of accommodating various electrified powertrains. Our sister publication Autocar UK has reported that the PPC can support range-extender EV powertrains; however, Audi doesn’t have plans to offer one in the A5.
Thanks to its new platform, the A5 is now larger than the previous A4, with a length of 4.83 meters (67mm longer) and a width of 1.86 meters (13mm wider). Its wheelbase is also longer at 2.9 meters (68mm longer). The A5’s design builds on the A4’s style and incorporates some features from the A6 e-tron sedan concept. Notable features include muscular wheel arches known as ‘Quattro muscle’ by Audi designers, OLED light units capable of displaying eight different patterns, and visible exhaust tips.

Inside, the new Audi A5 adopts technology from the Q6 e-tron. A prominent feature is the large curved screen. It includes an 11.9-inch digital display for the driver and a 14.5-inch touchscreen for infotainment. This screen also manages climate control and seat heating/ventilation settings. As an option, Audi provides a 10.9-inch touchscreen on the front passenger side, which includes a filter to prevent the driver from seeing it.
New Audi A5 powertrain
Initially, the A5 will offer both traditional internal combustion engines (ICE) and 48V mild-hybrid powertrains. These hybrids use Audi’s new MHEV Plus system, which includes two motor generators. This setup includes a centrally mounted powertrain generator in addition to the usual integrated starter-generator. The system improves efficiency and enhances regenerative braking capabilities. One advantage is that it can recover up to 25 kW of energy, which is more than three times the previous limit of 8 kW in the old S4 model. It also produces 18 kW (24 horsepower) and 230 Nm of torque.
Audi offers a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine in two versions: one with 150 horsepower and another with 204 horsepower. The more powerful version can be equipped with Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system as an option. The diesel option for the A5 features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 204 horsepower, which includes the MHEV Plus system for enhanced efficiency. At the top of the range is the S5, powered by a 3.0-liter V6 engine combined with a mild-hybrid system, delivering 367 horsepower. Audi plans to introduce a plug-in hybrid version of the A5 next year in global markets.
What to Expect from the New Audi A5’s Launch in India
In India, the current version of the A4 has been on sale since January 2021, priced between Rs 46.02 lakh and 54.58 lakh. It received its last update in September 2022. Audi India has a long history with the A4, suggesting the all-new A5 might arrive in India eventually, though the timing is uncertain. It’s expected to be available only as a sedan with petrol engine choices. When it does launch, it will compete with the Mercedes C-Class and BMW 3 Series.
