Nineteen years ago today, a young man put up the very first video on YouTube. Jawed Karim, one of YouTube’s founders, made a video called “Me at the Zoo” on April 23, 2005. He filmed it while standing in front of an elephant exhibit at the San Diego Zoo.

In the 19-second video, Karim says, “So, here we are in front of the elephants. What’s cool about them is they have really, really long trunks. And that’s pretty much it.”

Karim’s video was posted on YouTube a month before the social media platform’s public launch in May 2005.
