Man in Serious Condition After Belfast Hate Crime Attack; Wave of Arrests and Charges Across England and Northern Ireland
A man is in serious condition after a suspected hate crime attack in Belfast, where he was reportedly stomped on by attackers while others tried to protect him. This attack happened during a second night of unrest in Belfast, which has been part of wider riots that have spread to several cities across England and Northern Ireland since three young girls were killed in a knife attack in Southport last week.
In the wake of these riots, a 28-year-old man, Jordan Parlour, has been charged with stirring up racial hatred due to Facebook posts he allegedly made. Additionally, a 32-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman from Chester have been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated harassment related to social media posts encouraging protests outside a hotel.
On Tuesday, at least 36 people appeared in courts across England, facing charges connected to the ongoing riots. These riots began in Southport and have spread to cities like Hartlepool, Rotherham, Liverpool, and Middlesbrough.
In Middlesbrough, three courtrooms were busy with 28 cases of people aged 16 to 56. Thomas Rodgers, who admitted to throwing rocks at police, was remanded in custody. Joe Mackenzie, a company director from Darlington, was also remanded for his role in the rioting and will face trial later.
In South Shields, additional cases from the riots were handled, with Cleveland police reporting 62 arrests. In Sheffield, four men and two boys appeared in court for their involvement in a riot outside a hotel for asylum seekers. Joshua Simpson was the first person convicted for attempting to set fire to a Holiday Inn Express, and Liam Grey was refused bail for trying to grab a police riot shield.
