The eighth movie in the series takes place between the original 1979 film ‘Alien’ by Ridley Scott and the 1986 sequel ‘Aliens’ by James Cameron.
The new film “Alien: Romulus” has excited fans and critics alike with its terrifying scares and impressive effects. Directed by Fede Alvarez, this latest installment in the Alien series is set between the original 1979 film “Alien” and its 1986 sequel “Aliens.”
Early reviews highlight the film’s mix of practical effects and intense horror, praising it as one of the best entries in the franchise. Gizmodo reviewer Germain Lussier described it as a thrilling ride through the series with amazing gore and a fantastic final act. Variety’s Jazz Tangcay also praised the film, calling it one of the best in the series and noting that the practical effects were so effective they gave her nightmares. Courtney Howard found it “gripping” and “gorgeously bleak,” while Tessa Smith appreciated its homage to the original film, with practical effects standing out against CGI.
“Alien: Romulus” Receives Praise for Thrilling Final Act and Strong Performances
The movie, produced by Ridley Scott, follows a group of young space colonists led by Cailee Spaeny’s character Rain. They venture to a derelict space station, not knowing it’s inhabited by a deadly alien creature. The cast also includes David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. Many viewers have praised Spaeny and Jonsson’s performances, especially the thrilling third act.
Richard Fink from MovieWeb said the final act was incredibly frightening, while Nikko Caruso from Chicago Indie Critics called it “stunning.” However, some critics felt the film lost focus toward the end. Mark McPherson from Film Inquiry noted that the film’s themes became unclear in the final act.
#AlienRomulus was a lot of fun. It's gritty and gruesome in all the best ways. The thematic elements get lost in the shuffle by the third act, and some minor fanservice moments feel mildly tacky. Outside of that, it's a great Alien film with solid casting, sets, and effects. pic.twitter.com/DuatcB0pEX

Leo Rydel liked the horror elements and creature design but felt the movie relied too much on familiar franchise elements instead of standing out on its own.
Ridley Scott, who produced this film after directing the prequels “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant,” worked closely with Alvarez on the story. Scott has praised Alvarez for revitalizing the Alien series, calling him a burst of new energy for the franchise. Scott hopes Alvarez has more great ideas for future films.

Fede Álvarez continues to be one the best directors in the game.
The atmosphere is impeccable, and the Alien in action is terrific.
What really makes this entry memorable is how inventive some sequences are. A truly disturbing third act 👌 pic.twitter.com/uV7qWzname
I really dug #AlienRomulus. Tense, scary, grounded in the space realism of the original, and the Xenomorph looks incredible.

Mostly dug #AlienRomulus! The good? I appreciated the time spent establishing the group dynamic at the beginning. The creature work is often phenomenal. The sound design is top tier. #AlienRomulus doesn’t revolutionize the formula, but it has two vital secret weapons in Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson. Director Fede Álvarez returns the franchise to its horror roots, delivering one of the most spine-chilling final acts in any Alien movie. pic.twitter.com/IfEH2qfpl7
