(East Coast Airline )Local airport officials insist there was significant demand for flights to Alamo City.

SAN ANTONIO – JetBlue Airways is ending its operations in Alamo City. The airline will stop its nonstop flights to Boston and New York City in late October.

JetBlue started these flights from San Antonio International Airport about three years ago. “This decision isn’t about how well JetBlue’s flights are doing from our airport,” says Jesus Saenz, director of airports for the San Antonio Airport System. “Their flights are full and doing well, so I’m confident that other airlines will take over these routes soon.”

San Antonio is pushing hard to get one of five direct flights to Reagan National Airport. Mayor Ron Nurnberg says we could see these flights within months, once the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approves it. But two other competitors argue they deserve it more.

The FAA will soon decide if San Antonio gets a direct flight to Reagan National. Representative Chip Roy and other lawmakers are working hard to make it happen. Jeff Webster from the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce says this has been a goal for over 25 years. They believe the flight will boost tourism, business, and help the military community. San Antonio is the seventh largest city, and USAA, a major insurer of military personnel, is based there.

American Airlines isn’t the only airline fighting for a spot; United Airlines wants a flight to either San Francisco or Los Angeles. They argue that San Antonio is smaller than other cities trying to get the flight. JetBlue also wants a flight from D.C. to Puerto Rico and suggests people in San Antonio can drive to Austin for a nonstop service to DCA.

However, San Antonio leaders argue that their city, known as Military City USA, deserves this flight due to its large Hispanic community and significant military presence.
