German Festival Attack: A major search is underway in Germany after a knife attack at a festival in Solingen on Friday evening left three people dead and several others injured. The attacker, who is still unknown, targeted people randomly in a central square. Eight people were hurt, with five of them seriously.
The suspect, a man, is still on the run, and special forces are now involved in the search. Residents of Solingen have been advised to be careful and stay alert.
The police have very little information about the attacker and are looking for more details to help in their search. They do not yet know the motive for the attack, and they are not confirming if it was a terror attack, saying it would be too early to speculate.

On Friday, people gathered in Solingen for the “Festival of Diversity,” celebrating the city’s 650th anniversary. The attack happened near the stage where a musical performance was taking place. Eyewitness Lars Breitzke saw the attack happen just a few meters away from him. He noticed something was wrong when he saw the singer’s shocked expression, then saw someone nearby fall.
German DJ Topic was also performing nearby and was asked to continue to prevent panic. He and others hid in a store while police helicopters flew overhead.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called the attack “terrible and upsetting,” while Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said they were working hard to find the attacker and understand the motive. Solingen’s mayor, Tim Kurzbach, expressed shock and sadness, noting that the city went from celebrating to mourning.
On Friday, images and videos showed ambulances, police officers, and a helicopter at the scene of the attack. The event was the “Festival of Diversity,” a three-day celebration with music, food, and family activities.
The Bergisch Symphony Orchestra was set to perform on the main stage that day.
The attack comes as knife crime is increasing in Germany. Interior Minister Faeser has suggested tougher laws to address the problem. In 2023, police reported 8,951 knife crimes causing serious injuries, up from 7,160 the year before.
