Impact of Mumbai Rain: Every day, more than 3 million commuters use the suburban local train services in Mumbai and nearby Thane, Palghar, and Raigad.
Heavy rainfall has caused significant problems in Mumbai and nearby areas over the past day. Many places are flooded, and suburban train services have been disrupted. Between 1 am and 7 am on Monday, some parts of the city received more than 300 mm of rain in just six hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and the Konkan region. Vikhroli’s Veer Savarkar Marg Municipal School and MCMCR Powai recorded the highest rainfall, with over 315 mm in the last 24 hours.
Due to the heavy rain, more than 50 flights have been cancelled. Airlines have used social media to warn passengers and advise them to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
At Dombivli station, people waited for trains on tracks covered with water. There were reports of water-logging at various places including Worli, Buntara Bhavan in Kurla East, King’s Circle area, Dadar, and Vidyavihar Railway Station in Mumbai. Every day, more than 3 million commuters use the suburban local train services in Mumbai and nearby Thane, Palghar, and Raigad.
Train services between Kasara and Titwala stations in Thane district were stopped because soil covered the tracks between Atgaon and Thansit stations, causing disruption on the busy Kalyan-Kasara route.
Officials mentioned that if the rain stops for more than two hours, the waterlogging will go down. However, the weather office has predicted that Mumbai will experience heavy rain throughout the day. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects Mumbai to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall today.
Due to heavy rainfall and flash floods between Vasind and Khardi from 3 am to 6 am, the track embankment suffered damage, officials told news agency PTI. As a result, several trains between Kalyan and Kasara stations in Mumbai had to be diverted, rescheduled, or terminated.
Currently, multiple teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are deployed in Thane, Vasai (Palghar), Mahad (Raigad), Chiplun (Ratnagiri), Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Ghatkopar, Kurla, and Sindhudurg.
The NDRF rescued 49 people from a water-logged resort in Thane and 16 villagers in Palghar using boats and life jackets. They conducted these operations to help those stranded at the resort due to flooding.
