Manslaughter Investigation Started After Superyacht Sinks in Italy

Italian authorities have started a manslaughter investigation into the sinking of a superyacht off the coast of Sicily. The incident resulted in the deaths of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and six others.

Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio stated that the sinking was not due to bad weather but rather the crew’s actions and how the boat was managed. He emphasized that the investigation is not targeting any specific person.

“There are many possibilities for who might be responsible. It could be just the captain, the entire crew, or even the security guard. We are looking at all factors to figure out who is at fault,” Cartosio said.

He also mentioned that the prosecutor’s office has started a case against unknown individuals for negligent shipwreck and manslaughter.

Seven Bodies Recovered from Sinking Superyacht; Authorities Investigate Possible Waterspout: Manslaughter Investigation

Seven bodies have been recovered from the wreck of the superyacht over the past four days. Divers had to work about 50 meters (160 feet) underwater to find them. The last body found is believed to be that of Mike Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah.

The other bodies recovered are thought to be those of Jonathan Bloomer, a director at Morgan Stanley, his wife Judy, American lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda, and the yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas.

Italian authorities have confirmed which people were missing from the yacht but have not yet released official names for the bodies found.

Prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano said that the victims were likely asleep during the storm, which may be why they didn’t manage to escape. He noted that not all bodies were found in their own rooms.

The exact cause of the yacht’s sinking is still unclear, but many believe it may have been hit by a waterspout, a type of tornado. The coast guard reported a tornado, and a waterspout was noted in the European Severe Weather Database around the same time.
