Google just finished its Made by Google event, where they showed off the new Pixel 9 phones and updates to their other devices. While many details matched the leaks we’ve seen lately, there were still some new announcements. Here’s a quick summary of all the exciting news from the Pixel 9 event.
Google’s Pixel 9 lineup now includes an additional Pro model to choose from
Google has just revealed its Pixel 9 lineup, which includes three new flat phones and one folding phone. The lineup features:
- A basic Pixel 9 with a 6.3-inch screen
- A larger Pixel 9 Pro XL with a 6.8-inch screen
- A new, smaller Pixel 9 Pro with a 6.3-inch screen
All models have a new oval-shaped camera design, an upgraded G4 Tensor chip, longer battery life, and a new satellite SOS feature.
The prices are higher this year: the Pixel 9 starts at $799, the Pixel 9 Pro at $999, and the Pro XL at $1,099. The Pixel 9 and Pro XL will ship on August 22nd, while the smaller Pixel 9 Pro will be available in September.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold now has bigger screens and a thinner design
Along with three new regular Pixel phones, Google introduced the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. This new foldable phone is taller and slimmer than the previous model, with a 6.3-inch screen on the outside and an 8-inch screen on the inside.
It has a G4 Tensor chip and a much brighter inner display, now reaching 2,700 nits compared to 1,450 nits on the old model. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold costs $1,799 and will start shipping on September 4th.
Packed with AI features
Google’s new Pixel phones come with their Gemini AI assistant, which helps you find info in your apps or answer questions about your photos. There are also two new AI apps: Pixel Screenshots, which lets you search through your saved screenshots, and Pixel Studio, a tool that turns text into images.
Additionally, the Pixel 9 phones have new AI image editing features. For example, the “Add Me” tool can add someone to a group photo by combining two pictures. Google Photos now includes Magic Editor, which uses AI to change big parts of a photo, like replacing the sky.
The Google Pixel Watch 3 now comes in a bigger 45mm size
The Google Pixel Watch 3 now comes in a larger 45mm size, in addition to the 41mm model. It has thinner edges for a bigger screen, a new ultra wideband chip, a brighter display that reaches up to 2,000 nits, and many new fitness features.
A standout feature is its ability to detect if your pulse has stopped. If it doesn’t sense any movement or get a response from you, it can call emergency services. This feature will first be available in Europe. The 41mm Pixel Watch 3 starts at $349.99, while the 45mm model starts at $399.99. Both sizes will be available starting September 10th.
The Pixel Buds Pro 2 have new upgrades both inside and out
Google’s Pixel Buds Pro 2 are now smaller and lighter. They have new 11-millimeter drivers and a Tensor A1 chip to improve noise cancellation. The updated design includes a wing fin to help keep them in place during workouts. They offer up to eight hours of playback with noise cancellation on, or up to 30 hours with the charging case.
The Pixel Buds Pro 2 cost $229, which is more than the previous model’s $200 price. They will start shipping on September 26th.
Google introduces voice chat for Gemini
Gemini Live, which Google first mentioned in May, is now available for Gemini Advanced subscribers. This new feature allows you to talk to Google’s AI assistant using your voice. It can respond with one of 10 different voices, and you can have a back-and-forth conversation, even interrupting it while it’s speaking.
