A group has found a rare deep-sea fish that has washed up in California only 20 times since 1901(Rare 12 ft Oarfish).
A group kayaking and snorkeling off the San Diego coast found a rare 12ft-long oarfish floating dead in the water last weekend. This type of deep-sea fish has only been seen on California shores 20 times since 1901.
The oarfish, which can grow longer than 20ft, was brought to shore with the help of marine experts for study. These fish live in the deep sea where light doesn’t reach, making them very mysterious. They are sometimes called “doomsday fish” because of myths that they predict disasters or earthquakes.

The group who found the fish at La Jolla Cove near San Diego worked with lifeguards and marine experts to get the oarfish. Swimmers placed the fish on a paddleboard to bring it to shore, and then it was moved to the bed of a pickup truck.
Scientists from NOAA and Scripps planned to examine the fish on Friday to find out what caused its death.
