The Sabarmati Express derailed early Saturday morning between Kanpur and Bhimsen stations in Uttar Pradesh, with at least 20 coaches affected. Thankfully, there were no injuries or deaths. Seven trains have been cancelled, and three have been rerouted because of the accident. Emergency services have arranged buses and a MEMU train to help passengers get to Kanpur.
This incident comes at a time when train accidents in India have been increasing, with many people dying in the past year. Luckily, no injuries or deaths have been reported from this derailment so far.
A Railway Board official said, “No injuries have been reported yet. We are still checking how many coaches were affected.” The official also mentioned that they found some foreign material near the 16th coach, which might have caused the engine to hit it and derail.
The official added that a Patna-Indore train passed over the same track at 1:20 am without any problems. Passengers on the Sabarmati Express were asleep when the train suddenly stopped after a loud noise.

One passenger, Vikas, told PTI that right after the train left Kanpur station, they heard a loud noise and felt the coach shaking. Vikas, who got on the train in Varanasi, said the train was moving slowly when it derailed. When the train stopped, passengers started getting out and sitting by the tracks while they waited for help and called their families.
Another passenger mentioned that the police showed up about an hour after the derailment. The passengers are now waiting with their luggage by the side of the track.
The Indian Railways sent transportation to help move the passengers.
The train driver reported that a boulder hit the engine, damaging its cattle guard.
The Indian Railways is looking into what happened.
